Homecoming & Family Weekend

We're gearing up for Homecoming & Family Weekend 2009, Oct. 30 - Nov. 1, a not -to-be-missed event that brings together the entire campus community - students, faculty, administrators, parents, alumni and friends of Union - with a packed slate of activities and events for all ages.

You'll enjoy guest talks, panel discussions, campus and city tours, brunches, dinners, hay rides, tailgate picnics and more. Union football plays RPI in New York state's oldest collegiate football rivalry. Guaranteed to be both fierce and fun, this will be the 107th meeting in the series between the two schools. The series is the fifth oldest in NCAA Division III, and we're proud to report the Dutchmen hold a 78-24-4 lead. So be sure to bring your school spirit (and a warm blanket or two). For other sports enthusiasts, hockey, lacrosse and soccer are also on the bill.

If you haven't already done so, book hotel rooms and dinner reservations for the weekend as soon as you can. Visit the Homecoming Web site for details on registration, accommodations and transportation. Also check out the full
schedule for added events, such as the Hillel Brunch and Lecture featuring Prof. Stephen Berk.

While you're on campus, you'll notice not only the abundant fall foliage that makes our College more beautiful than usual, but the bustling construction under way between the F.W. Olin Building and Schaffer Library. Please bear with us as our much-anticipated, state-of-the-art Peter Irving Wold Center for Science & Engineering takes shape. Steel construction is expected to begin at the end of November and last for about a month.

When completed, the three-story, 35,000 square-foot research and education facility will house space for interdisciplinary programs such as Biochemistry and Environmental Science and Engineering, a high performance computer lab, flexible incubator labs for leading edge interdisciplinary research, and more.

Other News From Campus

During the break between trimesters, students will be working, doing internships, visiting friends at other colleges, or just enjoying being home with family. Some students will be on three-week mini-terms to locales as far-flung as Argentina, Egypt, India, London, Martinique, New Zealand and Thailand, and as close to home as New Orleans, a community-service trip, and a number of other southern cities, where the focus is on the history of American civil rights. We'll keep you posted on off-campus study opportunities in future issues of the parent newsletter.
