"In the Next Room" production starts Nov. 9

The Theater Department’s fall production “In the Next Room” will be performed Nov. 9 to 13.

The play, written by Sarah Ruhl, concerns the early history of the vibrator when doctors used it as a clinical device as treatment for “hysteria.” Other themes of the play, also known as “The Vibrator Play,” include Victorian ignorance of female sexual desire, motherhood, breastfeeding, and jealousy. The play was nominated for three Tony Awards in 2010.

"Playing 'period' is often difficult for performers but our student actors have most certainly risen to the challenge and all are contributing marvelously to bringing this vibrant play to life on the Yulman Theater stage," said William Finlay, chair of the Theater and Dance Department.

Tickets for the play, which is being performed in Yulman Theater, are still on sale. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. For information, call 388-7129.
