Updates on Hurricane Sandy

Updated at 6 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30

Administrative offices at Union College are expected to resume normal operations today. Administrative and non-essential employees should report for work as normal. Employees are reminded that the College relies on each person's discretion in determining whether or not to come to work or to leave early in bad weather.

Students should follow any instructions received from their professors regarding cancellations as classes are held or canceled at the discretion of individual faculty members. If students have not been contacted by their professors, they should report to class.

Widespread power loss is still a possibility for the area and the campus community is urged to remain cautious until the storm has completely passed the region.

Union College's Campus Safety Department continues to monitor the situation and will remain in contact with local emergency agencies.

Updated at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29

Administrative offices and all non-essential service areas will close at 3 p.m. today (Monday, Oct. 29).

Most evening events and classes will not be held.  Students can contact individual faculty and staff members for any information they may not already have received.

An emergency alert phone line has been set up at 518-388-6611. Calling this number will provide a recorded message with updated information regarding emergency and weather-related information for the Union College campus. The campus community is also urged to visit the college web page – www.union.edu  - the Union College Facebook page, and to check local media outlets for regular updates.

The Upper Class Dining Hall will remain open for all students but due to the potentially high winds expected later today, caution is advised when travelling around campus after 5 p.m. Students are urged to plan ahead for dining services. The library will remain open for normal operating hours for as long as possible. The Convenience Store will close at 4:30 today.

If we do experience weather extremes please stay inside and clear of windows and doors during periods of high winds. Charge all communication devices and have some water, nutritious snacks and flashlight available.

The College is closely monitoring the progress of Hurricane Sandy and making preparations for possible power outages and other emergency issues on campus. The College’s Safety Department has met regularly with the Schenectady Emergency Management group and has been tracking news from the National Weather Service.

Departments providing essential services such as snow removal, dining services, and campus safety, will evaluate staffing needs to minimize the exposure of employees to hazardous driving conditions. Employees are reminded that the College relies on each person's discretion in determining whether or not to come to work or to leave early in bad weather.
