Please join us in celebrating National Native American Heritage Month with a lecture and Cherokee Bible reading by Charlie McVicker, a recent alumna, enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation, and Cherokee language and culture researcher.
Charlie will describe the historical context surrounding Schaffer Library’s copy of the Cherokee Bible (held in Special Collections & Archives) prior to reading an excerpt of the text in the Cherokee language. The translation and printing of the New Testament in Cherokee was part of an orchestrated effort to demonstrate the "civilized" nature of Cherokees and to challenge the doctrines underlying Indian Removal policy. Elias Boudinot (~1802-1839), an educated Cherokee who assisted in the translation and procuring of the Cherokee press, had a vision of Cherokee nationalism and state-building, where assimilation could establish the Cherokee Nation as a peer-power to the United States, with an independent and international relationship.
When: Monday, November 4th beginning at 12:50 p.m.
Where: First floor of Schaffer Library, to the right of the Lally Reading Room.
Light refreshments will be served.
This event is sponsored by the Schaffer Library, History Department, Religious Studies Program, and the Office of Intercultural Affairs.
