How to navigate the IRS' Volunteer Tax Prep Program

Mary O'Keeffe, a public policy economist who teaches the College’s service-learning class, “Income Tax Policy and Practice,” shared her expertise on the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program with U.S. News and World Report.

This tax filing season marks the 13th year O’Keeffe has overseen Union’s VITA program. In that time, the program has helped secure more than $5 million in state and federal refunds for low-income working families and senior citizens.

O’Keeffe was honored in 2014 with a Jefferson Medal, the "Nobel Prize of public service. Sponsored by the Jefferson Awards Foundation, the annual honors recognize "unsung heroes" from across the country for their community service.

Inquiring minds at Union's Mandeville Gallery

The Union College Permanent Collection has a treasure trove of more than 300 historic scientific instruments, including 19th century prisms, a sextant, a sea octant that dates to the College’s founding in 1795, a refractometer and assorted mathematical models.

More than 30 of these instruments are presented in a new light in the Mandeville Gallery exhibit Probability & Uncertainty, in which they are juxtaposed with works by six contemporary artists who focus on scientific themes.

The Times Union recently featured the exhibit, which runs Jan. 13 through June 17.

Congressional Corner with Brad Hays

Bradley Hays, associate professor of political science, was a recent guest on "Congressional Corner" on WAMC, Northeast Public Radio. He discussed the pledge by Gov. Cuomo to oust New York Republicans from Congress.

Northeast Public Radio is a member of National Public Radio serving parts of seven northeastern states. These include New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania.

On Exhibit: The precision of the mokuhanga art form

“Mokuhanga: Impressions Past and Present,” an exhibit of Japanese woodblock prints created by three generations of artists, runs Jan. 3-March 13 in the Crowell and West Galleries in the Feigenbaum Center for Visual Arts.

Mokuhanga, the traditional printmaking technique of Japan, was perfected during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Daily Gazette recently featured the exhibit.

Photos: New science complex at Union College

The campus community gathered recently to celebrate the placement of the final steel beam for the new Integrated Science and Engineering Complex.

The $100 million project, the most ambitious and largest in the school’s history, will be completed in phases over the next two years. This includes an addition completed for fall term 2018 and renovation of three sections of the existing S&E center by fall 2019.

The ongoing project was featured in a photo gallery in the Times Union.
