The Heavenly Voices Choir will host a gospel choir performance Saturday at 3 p.m. in Memorial Chapel. The concert will include local gospel choirs and dance groups.
Among those participating are The Church Of God of Prophecy Choir, Schenectady County Community College Gospel Choir, First Reformed Church of Schenectady, The Albany Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, Hip Hop Community Praise Dancers and more.
The Heavenly Voices is a non-denominational group which promotes self expression through the singing of contemporary and traditional religious songs.
The choir recently performed at a Black History Month celebration to commemorate African-American history. The program, held in Old Chapel, featured history of African-American culture, hip hop and West Indian dances, a poetry reading, and a fashion show with traditional and modern clothing.
“Throughout the show, we honored our past, celebrated our present and acknowledge what we need to do for a brighter future,” said Ackeem Hill ’13, BSU public relations chair.
“Students did their research and used their talents to educate students about the many diverse aspects of African-American history,” said Gretchel L. Hathaway, senior director of Campus Diversity and Affirmative Action.
