Lydia Treat '11 was named this week’s Volunteer Week at the College’s Kenney Community Center.
Treat, from Waban, Mass., has volunteered at a local after-school tutoring program for the last four years. She currently serves as a program coordinator at Elmer Elementary School in Schenectady. Also, Treat has worked with Habitat for Humanity in Schenectady and New Orleans, and taught dental hygiene to preschool children.
Treat said her most important volunteer experience while at Union has been at the Community Hospice in Schenectady. For three years, she’s run a child bereavement program called Wave Riders. “This has been such a rewarding experience that inspired me to volunteer for Camp Erin, a weekend for grieving children, as well as my thesis research,” Treat said.
“Lydia has been such an asset to our program,” said Kate Fishman of Hospice. “She has a natural ability to connect with children.”
