Shim-In Borneman ’13 is this week’s Kenney Community Center Volunteer of the Week.
Borneman has served for two years as a Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) Mentor at the Kenney Center, working with local middle school students and helping rising high school seniors with the college process.
She is also a volunteer for Hospice, Camp Erin, Eddy Alzheimer’s Care Team, Habitat for Humanity and United Way 2-1-1 Contact Lifeline.
“Shim-In is a wonderful volunteer here at United Way 2-1-1 Northeast Region. She has volunteered over 75 hours with us providing emotional support to callers in crisis and thinking about suicide,” said Syreeta Garbarini, Call Supervisor for United Way 2-1-1. “She has great rapport and listening skills which lead to a number of callers de-escalating.”
Raised in Irvington, N.Y., Borneman, a biology major, serves as a tutor coordinator for the College’s Academic Opportunity Program, as well as being involved in the orchestra and as treasurer of the Young Republicans.
