Dozens of high school students from around the state
Students compete at last year's STEP Regional Science Bowl
will compete in the STEP (Science and Technology Entry Program) Regional Science Bowl Saturday, Feb. 11, at College Park Hall.
Sixteen teams consisting of five students each face off in a “Jeopardy-style” round robin competition. The winning team receives an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the National Science Bowl in April.
Each team is mentored by representatives from a dozen institutions, including Union, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, University at Albany, Fulton Montgomery Community College, University of Buffalo and Rochester Institute of Technology.
Union’s STEP program is run through the Kenney Community Center. The College’s two teams are coached by Son Nguyen ’14 and Zoralys Molina ’13. In addition, nearly 70 volunteers from Union will serve as moderators, judges, timekeepers and scorekeepers.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of STEP, which encourages historically underrepresented students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math. It’s also the third straight year Union has hosted the regional competition. STEP is sponsored in part by the New York State Department of Education.
The opening round begins at 9:15 a.m., with the final round scheduled to get under way at 3:45 p.m. Awards will be presented at 4:15 p.m.
