Roman Yukilevich, assistant professor of biology, was a first co-author on “Incompatibility and Competitive Exclusion of Genomic Segments Between Sibling Drosophila Species," accepted for publication in Plos Genetics. His research investigated the extent to which recently diverged species show genetic incompatibilities, such that genomic regions of one species are unable to be incorporated into the genome of the second species.
The Journal of Applied Physics accepted a manuscript written by Rebecca Cortez, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, and colleagues at the Air Force Research Laboratories and Rice University. "Electrical Conductivity of Cationized Ferritin Decorated Gold Nanoshells" addresses the tuning of electrical properties for future generations of nanodimensional electronic circuits. The work was partially funded by National Science Foundation grants.
Stephen Romero, associate professor of psychology, has pledged to bicycle 200 miles in two consecutive days this summer to raise money for the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center in The Prouty, an event based in Hanover, N.H. He and his wife, Karen Bilowith, are working to raise $7,500 in corporate and individual sponsorships to donate to the cancer center. “We are committed to this cause because cancer has impacted the lives of many members of our families, and we know the direct benefit of regional centers like Dartmouth-Hitchcock on both the advancement of research and clinical care for people fighting the disease,” Romero said.
Lauren Brown ’11, Ann Anderson, the Agnes S. Macdonald Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Mary Carroll, professor of chemistry, have published a research paper in the Journal of Sol-Gel Science and Technology. The paper is titled “Fabrication of Titania and Titania-Silica Aerogels using Rapid Supercritical Extraction.” Union was also awarded its second aerogel-related patent. Inventors are Anderson, Carroll, Ronald Bucinell, associate professor of mechanical engineering; Ben Gauthier ’02 and Smitesh Bakrania ‘03. Members of Union’s Aerogel Team also presented their research at two national conferences this spring. In March, Stephen Juhl ‘12 and Carroll presented a poster paper on “Preparation and Characterization of Alumina-based Aerogels for Applications in Automotive Catalysis” in the Inorganic Division at the American Chemical Society’s 243rd National Meeting, in San Diego, Calif. Anderson and Nicholas Dunn ‘11 were co-authors on the presentation.
Ronald Bucinell, associate professor of mechanical engineering, has received a $38,000 sub-award to continue collaborative research activities with partner Ecovative Design, made possible by a National Science Foundation Small Business Innovation Research grant.
Robert Olberg, the Florence B. Sherwood Professor of Life Sciences, was awarded an additional $21,521 grant award from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research in support of his research project, “The Neuronal Control of Flying Prey Interception in Dragonflies.” This award supports his collaborative study to obtain high-speed video recordings to reconstruct in 3D flight trajectories of an aerial predator.
Work by Sandra Wimer, printmaker and senior artist in residence, has been selected for inclusion in the 2012 Mohawk-Hudson Regional, to be held at the University at Albany Art Museum. An opening reception is set for 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, June 28. Founded in 1936, this annual exhibition is among the country’s longest-running regionals, providing a leading benchmark for contemporary art activity in the Upper Hudson Valley. The exhibition is collaboratively sponsored by the university, Albany Institute of History and Art and Hyde Collection, Glens Falls. This year’s juror was Nato Thompson, a curator at the New York-based public arts institution Creative Time and former curator at MASS MoCA, North Adams, Mass.
