Once again, the Taylor Music Center offers "music to fit your schedule" with a new concert series beginning Monday, Sept. 24.
“These short concerts are designed to fit in between the work and school day and evening activities,” said Hilary Tann, the John Howard Payne Professor of Music. “Concerts last from 5:00 p.m. to 5:50 p.m., a perfect interlude. We want people to come and enjoy this sound bite."
The concerts are held in Emerson Hall, Taylor’s intimate recital hall, and will feature some of Union's instrumental teachers as well as an early music ensemble.
The series begins with “Alone, Together,” a recital for piano and violin by two performers from the Eastman School of Music, EunMi Ko and Sini Virtanen. They have been playing together since 2009 and have introduced works by more than 20 composers in their "Music After 1900" concert series. Tann came to know them during the 2011 Women in Music Festival at Eastman, where she was composer-in-residence.
Monday's concert begins with two works by Olivier Messiaen and concludes with a 20th century classic, Claude Debussy's Sonata in G minor.
In between are two works by Tann. The second, "On Ear and Ear ..." was completed last year for a memorial compact disc for Tann's mentor at Princeton, Milton Babbitt. The piece takes just four measures of a1950 composition by Babbitt and expands them into a meditation on Gerard Manley Hopkins' sonnet, "The Sea and The Skylark."

Oct. 8: "Tour of Eastern Europe" with Kristin Stewart, flute, and Professor Palma Catravas, piano
Oct. 15: Lok Ng, piano, playing Beethoven, Chopin, Busoni and Liszt
Oct. 22: Sonnambula Viol Consort playing string music from 17th century England
Oct. 29: Harry Pellegrin, guitar, playing works by Tarrega, Ponce, Satie and others.
