Vale Cemetery recently earned a designation from the National Park service as a site on the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
Moses Viney, one of the College's most important figures, was instrumental in helping Vale achieve this honor. Viney, a runaway slave from Maryland who escaped to Schenectady on the Underground Railroad, was a coachman and messenger at Union. During his time here he became the constant companion of longtime College President Eliphalet Nott, who eventually secured his freedom.
The Daily Gazette spoke with Melinda Lawson, senior lecturer in History, about the recognition.
