Connie Schmitz is this week’s Kenney Community Center’s Volunteer of the Week.
Since 1993, Schmitz has cared for the campus gardens and serves as the landscape specialist in the Facilities Department.
She is the lead volunteer at the College’s Octopus’ Garden, which grows food for the organic café and the local community.
“It has been rewarding to grow with a group that tries to educate themselves about environmentally-friendly gardening and to supply organic vegetables to those in need,” Schmitz said.
Additionally, along with students, she has improved the cleanliness and has repaired broken playground equipment at the South Ave. Park. She also donates her time working with the Women-Build Chapter of Schenectady’s Habitat for Humanity.
