This week’s Kenney Community Center’s Volunteers of the Week are the members of Engineers Without Borders.

Comprised of students in engineering, as well as other majors, Engineers Without Borders is a club that allows students of all disciplines and backgrounds to interact with communities. Its focus is on service-learning that encourages students to expand their knowledge of technical matters, as well as cultural differences.

Benefits from being a member of Engineers Without Borders includes affording students the opportunity to experience real-life problem solving with the guidance of faculty and professionals.

The club has been volunteering in Schoharie to help clean-up after Hurricane Irene, both this year and last. They also plan to go to local middle and elementary schools to do engineering themed projects with the children. This term, the club co-hosted an event with KEEN and ASME where Union students competed to build the tallest structure possible out of pasta, string and tape, with the goal of getting non-engineering students involved.
