Cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han will join Emerson Quartet violinist Philip Setzer to perform at Memorial Chapel on Sunday, Jan. 6 at 3 p.m. as part of the Union College Concert Series.
Finckel and Han open the program with Brahms’s stirring Cello Sonata No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 38. Setzer will join them for two of Dvořák's celebrated trios - the folk-inspired Piano Trio No. 4 in E Minor, Op. 90, “Dumky” and the impassioned Piano Trio No. 3 in F Minor, Op. 65.
Appearing on the series for the 21st time, David Finckel and Wu Han are at the forefront of today’s musical scene. Artistic directors of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and of Music@Menlo (which they founded), the married duo have been lauded for their insightful performances and innovative approach to music. They energized the recording industry by launching classical music’s first musician-directed and internet-based recording company ArtistLed in 1997.
Finckel, the founding cellist of the renowned Emerson String Quartet welcomes his colleague Philip Setzer (first violinist of the Quartet) for Dvořák's dynamic piano trios. Setzer has a storied career in the Emerson Quartet and was a bronze medal winner in the famed Queen Elisabeth Competition. He participates regularly at the Marlboro Music Festival and the Aspen Festival in addition to his busy touring schedule with the Emerson Quartet.
