Now in its 42nd Season, the Union College Concert Series presents leading musicians in fourteen concerts from October 2013 – April 2014 at its home in Memorial Chapel. The Series offers another impressive lineup of artists (schedule below) welcoming audience favorites, as well as artists making their debuts or who have not appeared on the series in several years, including:
Stefan Jackiw (debut) – the emerging violinist who canceled his series appearance last season due to an injury, makes his Carnegie Hall debut and has performed with the orchestras of Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, New York, Philadelphia and others throughout the world.
Shai Wosner (debut) – this Israeli-born pianist who has appeared with leading international orchestras from the Vienna Philharmonic to the Chicago Symphony, plays a program featuring late works of Schubert including the B-Flat Major Sonata, D. 960.
Sarasa Ensemble with Dominique Labelle (debut) – the renowned early music group is joined by this leading soprano in a rarely-heard program of music by Luigi Boccherini, including one of his masterpieces – the Stabat Mater, G. 532a.
Jonathan Biss – one of the leading pianists of his generation, he returns to the Series after a five-year absence in works of Brahms, Chopin, Beethoven and others. In addition to his busy career, his free online lecture series on Beethoven offered through Coursera, has over 30,000 subscribers from around the world.
Artemis Quartet – This German-based quartet makes its first series appearance in almost ten years. Playing annually at Carnegie Hall and other major venues around the world, the quartet plays two Brahms quartets bookending a work of György Kurtág.
Emanuel Ax – the legendary pianist returns to the series after a five-year absence in an innovative program intertwining works of Brahms with new works by Missy Mazzoli and Brett Dean.
Other highlights include return performances by the Emerson String Quartet (with new cellist Paul Watkins), and the Brentano and Jupiter string quartets; pianist Jeremy Denk; Musicians From Marlboro; cellist Sophie Shao and Friends; ECCO (East Coast Chamber Orchestra); and the Boston Camerata. The Series will also feature ten regional premieres of works by leading composers throughout its season.
