Clifford Brown, the Robert Porter Patterson Professor of Government, is the co-author of a new biography of Solomon Northup, a free black man in Upstate New York who was kidnapped into slavery in Louisiana, rescued and returned to his wife and three children a dozen years later.
Brown teamed up with David Fiske, a former senior librarian at the New York State Library and Rachel Seligman, the former director of the Mandeville Gallery, to write Solomon Northup: The Complete Story of the Author of Twelve Years a Slave. The book coincides with new movie about Northup, “12 Years a Slave,” that has generated considerable buzz from film critics and audiences in pre-screenings. Written by John Ridley and directed by Steve McQueen, the film won the People’s Choice Award at last month’s Toronto International Film Festival.
Brown recently appeared on WAMC's The Roundtable to discuss the book with his co-authors.
