Christopher Chabris, associate professor of psychology, will lecture as part of One Day University, a national adult education program that brings together scholars from top schools, including Harvard, Yale, Amherst and Swarthmore.
Chabris’s lecture, "When Intuition Fails: Why We're Often Wrong When We Think We're Right," is Saturday, Nov. 16, at the New York Hilton, 1335 6th Ave., New York City.
The lecture is related to the acclaimed 2010 book by Chabris and Daniel J. Simons, a psychology professor at the University of Illinois, The Invisible Gorilla, And Other Ways Our Intuitions Deceive Us. Now in paperback, the book, according to the authors, tackles “six everyday illusions that profoundly influence our lives: the illusions of attention, memory, confidence, knowledge, cause, and potential.”
This is the third time Chabris has been invited to participate in One Day University.
Book reviews and essays by Chabris have appeared in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times and Wall Street Journal, among other publications.
Last month, he got pulled into a public spat with best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell after he wrote a piece for Slate about Gladwell’s latest book, David and Goliath: Misfits, Underdogs, and the Art of Battling Giants. Gladwell responded with a piece headlined, “Christopher Chabris Should Calm Down.”
Chabris joined Union in 2007.
