The College will celebrate Black History Month throughout February with a broad range of events, including concerts, discussions, presentations and exhibits.
Highlights include:
12:50 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7: Discussion on how mental illness affects the African-American community. Hosted by Active Minds and the Black Student Union (BSU). Unity Lounge, Reamer 305.
6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15: BSU 10th Annual Black History Month Show and Celebration. College Park Hall. After-show party begins at 9 p.m. in Old Chapel.
5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16: The 9th Annual Black History Month Step Show at the Palace Theater, Albany, NY. BSU to provide transportation and tickets. Sign-up in the Student Activities office.
Wednesday, Feb. 19 and Thursday, Feb. 20: “Hijabi for a Day.” Members of the Interfaith Youth Core will distribute scarves and buttons at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 19. Participants will wear the Hijab on Feb. 20 and share their experiences at 6 p.m. Locations TBD.
6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20: WMHT Community Cinema at Union presents “The Trials of Muhammad Ali.” The program includes a screening of the documentary and a call to action discussion. Reamer Auditorium.
4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23: Heavenly Voices Gospel Choir Annual Concert, featuring performances by Union’s Gospel Choir, local churches and the Heavenly Liturgical Dance Ministry. Old Chapel.
10 a.m. to 5 pm. Tuesday, Feb. 25: The Black History 101 Mobile Museum 3M exhibit will focus on Martin Luther King Jr., Motown and Michael Jackson. Over 200 original artifacts will be on display. A multimedia presentation is scheduled for 4 p.m. Schaffer Library.
7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26: Black History Jeopardy, hosted by BSU. Unity Lounge.
5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28: “The Middle Passage” presented by Alpha Phi Alpha. This original performance explores a portion of the triangular trade where people from Africa were shipped to the New World and how it relates to the present day. Old Chapel.
All month long: “Diversity in Dining” menu choices celebrating Caribbean, Southern and Creole cuisine.
“Spotlight on Black Inventors” showcase. Office of Multicultural Affairs.
Black History Month events are co-sponsored by a range of offices, departments and programs, including Campus Diversity and Inclusion, Multicultural Affairs, History, Active Minds, BSU, Interfaith Youth Core, WMHT, Africana Studies, Film Studies, Heavenly Voices Gospel Choir, Schaffer Library, Dining Services and Alpha Phi Alpha.
