What could be more perfect on a spring day than to hear music based on a tango!
Come to a 50-minute concert on Monday, May 12 at Emerson Auditorium in Taylor Music Center and you will hear this and other pieces influenced by Spanish sounds. Concert pianist and composer Leanne Rees will perform music by Isaac Albéniz, Francisca Gonzaga, Alberto Ginastera, Dane Rudhyar, Claude Debussy, Alberto Williams, and Enrique Granados. Rees has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Smithsonian Institution, the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in South Carolina, and the Kennedy Center, among other important venues. Trained as a classical artist, Rees has also explored the world of jazz. Her compact disk Crosswinds: Classical and Jazz includes music by George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Margaret Bonds, Marian McPartland, Mary Lou Williams, Francis Poulenc and others. She gave the premiere performance of Marian McPartland’s “Life Notes” at Carnegie Hall.
Rees began piano studies in California at the age of four. She performed with the San Jose Symphony Orchestra at the age of nine and with the Bach Festival Orchestra at the age of thirteen. She studied with Allen Ferguson, Sylvia Jenkins, Adolph Baller and Thomas Mastroianni.
Step into Emerson Auditorium on Monday afternoon and hear sounds from Spain, Brazil, Argentina, France, and the United States. The pieces include music written by both 19th- and 20th-century composers.
