Three Union students have been awarded a Goldwater Scholarship, the
premiere undergraduate award for students pursuing careers in mathematics, natural sciences and engineering.
Ryan M. Bouck '16, Michael Warrener ’16 and Theodor Di Pauli von Treuheim ’16 are among 260 sophomores and juniors selected for academic merit from among 1,206 students nominated by their colleges and universities nationwide. Each will receive up to $7,500 to cover tuition, fees, books, and room and board.
Bouck received an honorable mention last year.
Created in 1989, the scholarship honors the memory of U.S. Senator Barry M. Goldwater.
Of this year’s Scholars, 34 are mathematics majors, 154 are science and related majors, 68 are majoring in engineering, and four are computer science majors.
The program boasts an impressive career track record. Recent Goldwater Scholars have been awarded 86 Rhodes Scholarships, 123 Marshall Awards, 123 Churchill Scholarships, and numerous other distinguished fellowships.

Ryan M Bouck
Hometown: Fultonville, N.Y.
Major: Mechanical Engineering, minor in Nanotechnology
Career goal: Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering. Conduct research in synthesis, characterization, and applications of nanomaterials and teach at the university level.
Michael Warrener
Hometown: Egg Harbor City, N.J.
Major: Double major in Physics and Mathematics
Career goal: Pursue theoretical astrophysics research and teach at the collegiate level.
Theodor Di Pauli von Treuheim
Hometown: Caldaro, Italy
Major: Bioengineering
Career goal: Ph.D. in bioengineering with research in the bionics/prosthetics industry, bridging orthopedics and neurophysiology.
