All that jazz: Series celebrates art form

In conjunction with the class “The History of Jazz," the Music Department is presenting a four-concert series, "Monday Jazz," celebrating this uniquely American art form.

Each performance is from 1:50 to 2:55 p.m. in Emerson Auditorium in the Taylor Music Center.

All events are free and open to the public.

Monday, Sept. 26: Ragtime and Early Jazz
Professor Tim Olsen leads a 12-piece chamber ensemble in music of Scott Joplin, W.C. Handy, Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong.

Monday, Oct. 10: Big Band Swing

Olsen leads a 16-piece big band in music of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie and Gil Evans.

Monday, Oct. 24: Bebop and Cool Jazz

Olsen leads a quintet in the music of Charlie Parker, Gerry Mulligan, Horace Silver and Sonny Rollins.

Monday, Nov. 7: Modern Sounds

Olsen leads a sextet in music of Wayne Shorter, Weather Report and Miles Davis.
