Celebrated Russian pianist makes his Union College debut

Pianist Alexander Melnikov performs on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 3 p.m. in Memorial Chapel.

The series welcomes the celebrate Russian virtuoso Alexander Melnikov for his debut in a program of Rachmaninoff’s Chopin Variations, Op. 22 and Corelli Variations, Op. 42, and Debussy’s Préludes (Book II).

A protégé of the legendary Russian pianist Sviatoslav Richter, Alexander Melnikov has performed with leading orchestras including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Gewandhaus Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, NDR Symphony, Russian National Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, and the NHK Symphony. He is a regular recital partner with such artists as violinist Isabelle Faust, cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, and others.

Melnikov’s recording of Shostakovich’s Preludes and Fugues for Harmonia Mundi was named by the BBC Music Magazine as one of the “50 Greatest Recordings of All Time” in 2011. Along with Jean-Guihen Queyras, Pablo Heras-Casado and the Freiburger Barockorchester, Melnikov recorded a trilogy of CDs featuring the Schumann Concertos and Trios; the second installment, featuring the Piano Concerto and the Piano Trio No. 2, was released in 2015.
