Timothy E. Sams ’90 has been named president of the State University of New York Old Westbury, a campus of 4,800 undergraduates and 300 graduate students on Long Island.

Sams earned his bachelor’s degree in history and sociology from Union.

He is vice president of student affairs at Prairie View (Texas) A&M University. Previously, he was senior vice president for student development at Morehouse College in Atlanta, and vice president for student life at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

He holds a master’s degree in Africana studies from the University at Albany, and a Ph.D. in African American studies from Temple University.

He will take office at SUNY Old Westbury on Jan. 11.
