My most significant memory of my years at WRUC was the invention [by David Emery ’71)] of “The Night Machine.” Living in South College, where WRUC was located, I would often get a rap on my door in the early morning hours, with the explanation that the “USS WRUC” was sailing with no one at the helm.
Dave took the “guts” of a jukebox, and synchronized it with a cart machine to insert promotions and commercials while the records were changing. It didn’t always work … but it was much better than having to find enough coffee to survive the “graveyard shift” in person.
