Walk into Schaffer Library and you are likely to spot the familiar face of John Myers. An associate librarian who oversees the Catalog & Metadata unit, Myers joined Union in 2001. He is responsible for managing the records that describe and provide access to the library's physical resources. He also performs all cataloging for the rare books in the library’s archives and Special Collections. This has given him an opportunity to come across such treasures as George Washington's hair, 17th century manuscript music and 19th century translations of the Bible into various Asian languages. At home, he enjoys time with his cat, his garden and his husband, not necessarily in that order.
FIRST APP YOU LOOK AT IN THE MORNING:
I wish I had a more edifying reply, but Facebook, alas.
ONE BOOK YOU HAVE READ MULTIPLE TIMES:
For many years, I read the entire “Lord of the Rings” trilogy on an annual basis. I think it was an easier vacation than navigating a "real" getaway. Who needs a travel agent when an entire continent is at your fingertips on the bookcase?
BEST ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED:
Not always easy to follow but, "Do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy?"
FAVORITE SPOT ON CAMPUS:
I do not go often enough, but Jackson's Garden. It is amazing that we have this oasis on campus.
GO-TO BREAKFAST:
Why, sausage, egg and cheese on a roll from Dutch Hollow! I would get one every day if my waistline and cholesterol levels could handle it.
NETFLIX OR AMAZON:
Whichever has the programs that my husband is watching, LOL. I grew up having to get up to change the channel on the TV and subsequently navigated programming VCRs and DVRs. But having an entire universe of entertainment at my disposal is more than I can take on.
FAVORITE PODCAST:
I haven't picked up on podcasts yet (see that "entire universe of entertainment" thing above).
ONE SKILL YOU WISH YOU HAD:
There are so many to pick from! Drawing or painting, playing any musical instrument, woodworking, having a love of going to the gym, to name a few. If I absolutely had to pick one, I would have to go with playing a musical instrument - there is such a rich skill set and knowledge base that would be involved.
BEST PART OF YOUR DAY:
Any time in the garden.
LITTLE KNOWN FACT ABOUT YOU:
Just before the pandemic, I started taking pottery classes. I am very much enjoying exploring this creative outlet. I acquired enough skills to throw some decent pieces, although I am not yet good enough to produce a piece intentionally; I just play with the clay and hope for the best!
