Citation presented by President David R. Harris to Robin Queen, the Kevin P. Granata Faculty Fellow and a professor of biomedical engineering and mechanics at Virginia Polytechnic University:
Robin Queen – engineer, researcher, mentor, advocate, mother – you have devoted your career to
improving lives and expanding opportunities.
You have collaborated with colleagues across disciplines – surgeons, athletic trainers, anthropologists
and psychologists – to address challenging problems at the intersection of engineering and medicine,
in particular, understanding lower extremity injury prevention and rehabilitation.
Your team developed a model to determine risk factors for re-injury after anterior cruciate ligament
repair. You have done pioneering work in ankle osteoarthritis and total ankle replacement.
Your recent election as a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering
honors you among the top two percent of engineers, entrepreneurs and innovators in your field.
Among your greatest contributions, however, has been your commitment to gender equity and the
advancement of women in engineering. You once said that you made a decision to stay in academia to
show other women what is possible. Indeed, you have been a leader, by action and example, in forging
a future for all in engineering and beyond.
It is my pleasure to recognize your contributions to research and to the future of engineering.
By the authority vested by the Regents of the University of the State of New York in the Trustees of
Union College, and delegated by the Trustees to me, I am pleased to confer on you the degree of Doctor
of Science, honoris causa, with all the rights and privileges appertaining thereto.
