Complex Questions: Global Challenges & Social Justice

The Curriculum

Every Union student takes Complex Questions (CQ) courses from a range of liberal arts perspectives:

The eight Complex Questions Perspectives arranged as puzzle pieces

Each CQ course falls under one of our two Areas of Inquiry: Global Challenges (G), and Justice, Equity, Identity, and Diversity (J). You must take at least one G course and one J course, but you decide how to distribute the Perspectives. For example, you might focus mainly on one Area of Inquiry. Or you might take some courses that explore global challenges (such as GNPS, GDQR, and GSPE) and others that grapple with social justice issues (such as JCAD, JLIT, JWOL, and JCHF).

There are many possible paths to CQ completion. Some courses for your major or minor may fulfill CQ requirements, inspiring you to further explore an issue in other Perspectives. Alternatively, intersections between two or three CQ courses might lead you to pursue an interdisciplinary minor, such as Law and Humanities, Environmental Science and Policy, or Digital Studies.

No matter how you choose to satisfy the Complex Questions requirements, you will gain a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics that shape our world.
