Why Union:
I applied to Union because a family friend had just graduated and loved his experience here. I was set on going to another small liberal arts school when, just before deposits were due, my parents decided we should drive to Schenectady for one last look. As soon as I got to campus that beautiful spring day, something clicked. I immediately knew Union was where I would spend the next four years.
Most inspiring class:
Organic Chemistry. Prior to orgo, my study habits and time management skills were almost nonexistent. Orgo forces you to figure out what study strategies work for you, plan your time wisely and manage stress in order to succeed.
Also excited about:
Studying abroad and interning in London. When else can you drop everything for two-and-a-half months to travel around and experience Europe with great friends?
Favorite study spot:
My research lab in the Wold Center. I can isolate myself yet still go downstairs to take a break (and get coffee!). Also, a group study room in the Schaffer Library basement. I enjoy being able to use a whiteboard and talk things out with other students in the course.

Things I'm passionate about at Union:
- Subsidized, convenient skiing
- Having great discussions (both academic and not) with professors, staff and administrators

How I'm making Union a better place:
As a student member of the Board of Trustees, I interact with administrators and have a vote on the board. I also give a student’s perspective on major decisions the college faces, such as construction and renovation of facilities. For example, the Senior Trustee and I gave a presentation to the Student Affairs Committee updating them on student climate on campus. This included students’ attitudes toward everything from major philanthropic events, such as the Dutchmen Dip, to alumni activities. In this way, I am able to help improve the student experience at Union.
Looking into the future:
I plan to go to medical school.
Advice for incoming students:
Get involved. Don’t be afraid to try new things and meet new people. Remember that everyone else is in the same boat! Also show initiative and take advantage of your professors’ office hours. They are here because they love to teach, converse with students and genuinely want you to succeed.
