Several students were recently awarded scholarships for summer academic programs. Devneet Singh ’21 received a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship to study Punjabi in Chandigarh, India. James Segee-Wright ’20 received a Critical Language Scholarship to spend the summer studying Chinese in Xi’an, China. Tawreak Eddington ’21 was selected as a 2019 Mount Vernon Leadership Fellow. This six-week summer institute, based in the Virginia home of George Washington, offers learning and networking opportunities.
Chad Orzel, the Gordon Gould Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, presented a talk at the March Meeting of the American Physical Society. This is the largest annual physics conference in the world, with this year's meeting bringing together more than 12,000 physicists in Boston. Orzel’s talk, “Science Blogs and Talking Dogs: Reflections on 17 Years in Social,” was part of an invited session, “Sharing Science: How to Communicate with the Public,” organized by the APS's Forum on Outreach and Engaging the Public. Samuel Amanuel, professor of physics and astronomy, presented a paper on the transition of physically confined secondary alcohols in nanopores. The paper was co-authored with Jason Turner ‘18, Alexander Clain ‘15 and Caleb Novins ‘15. Union alumni who also spoke at the March Meeting include Matthew Giso ’16 and Xavier Capaldi ’16.
Ann Anderson, the Agnes S. MacDonald Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Mary Carroll, the Dwane W. Crichton Professor of Chemistry, have co-authored two papers in collaboration with the research group of Cinzia Buratti at the University of Perugia in Italy. “Acoustic Measurements on Monolithic Aerogel Samples and Application of the Selected Solutions to Standard Window Systems” was published in Applied Acoustics. “Optical and Visual Experimental Characterization of a Glazing System with Monolithic Silica Aerogel” was published in Solar Energy.
Deidre Hill Butler, associate professor of sociology, organized and chaired a panel on Africana Motherwork research at the National Council for Black Studies 43rd Annual Conference in New Orleans.
