Jennifer Fredricks, professor of psychology, David Cotter, professor of sociology, and Denesha Lafontant '23 co-authored, "Paths Into and Out of STEM Fields: A Qualitative Study of Women and Students of Color at a Predominately White Institution". This paper was accepted to the Journal of Research in Science Teaching, and is based on findings from interviews conducted with Union College students. This research was supported by the Howard Hughes Inclusive Excellence Grant and NSF-SUCCESS LEADERS grant.

Union College recently signed the Green Chemistry Commitment. Laura A. MacManus-Spencer, chemistry department chair and associate professor, and Mary K. Carroll '86, Dwane W, Crichton Professor of Chemistry and current President of the American Chemical Society, talked with Juliana Vidal of Beyond Benign about green chemistry's role in education at Union. That interview was published today as an article on Beyond Benign's website.

Michele Ricci Bell, associate professor of german studies, has been invited to serve a second three-year term on the Editorial Board of The German Quarterly, beginning in November 2024. The German Quarterly is internationally regarded as one of the leading academic journals in the field of German Studies.

Dimitrios Vasileios Zora '26, Devin Ramos '25 and Francis Wilkin, senior lecturer in physics and astronomy have published "Lightcurve for Koronis Family Member (1482) Sebastiana" in the September issue of the Minor Planet Bulletin, where their graph is featured on the front cover. Based on four nights of imaging at the Union College Observatory, the paper is the outcome of the WAC course Ast 230, Observational Astronomy.

Michael Okwori, Mary H. and Richard K. Templeton Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering, Nguyen Ho '26, and Zaid Fafouri '26 presented a paper titled “Towards A Minimalistic Sensor-Based Smart Soccer Net with Machine Learning” at the IEEE 15th Annual Ubiquitous Computing, Electronics and Mobile Communication Conference, held at the IBM T.J Watson Research Center, Yorktown, NY, October 17-19, 2024. Austin Gregory '25 also contributed to the research and co-authored the paper. The paper was awarded the best paper in the Internet of Things (IoT) category.

Carol Weisse, Ronald M. Obenzinger Professor of Psychology and director of health professions, recently had a paper published in the journal Health Professions Education. The abstract of the article Empathy Development among Undergraduate Health Professions’ Students Serving as Caregivers to Hospice Patients is now available online.
