Hans-Friedrich Mueller, professor of classics, together with Drew Kopp of Rowan University, have published "De figuris: Rediscovering Publius Rutilius Lupus,” in the Journal for the History of Rhetoric. The authors present a Latin text—with a facing English translation—of the first-century-CE rhetorician Publius Rutilius Lupus’s “De figuris sententiarum et elocutionis [On Figures of Thought and Speech].” This first-ever English translation appears together with an introduction that presents two stages of the text’s reception history: its impact on the profusion of rhetorical compendiums in the sixteenth century and the treatment that it received in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century studies, which led twentieth-century scholars to neglect a treatise that deserves closer study.
Work by Rachel Stern, assistant professor of visual arts, photography, is included in the
Philadelphia Museum’s new exhibition, “Staged: Studio Photographs from the Collection.” The
exhibition brings together photographs from the 19 th century through the present day, exploring
ways that photographers, and sometimes their subjects, have worked and played within the
confines of the studio. Stern’s work is showcased among other highlights in the museum’s
permanent collection, including those by acclaimed photographers Berenice Abbott, Samuel
Fosso, Irving Penn, Cindy Sherman Mickalene Thomas and many others. The exhibition runs
through June 29. Stern’s work is also included in “a field of bloom and hum,” a major queer
artist showcase at the Tang Teaching Museum & Art Gallery at Skidmore College, Saratoga
Springs, N.Y. The show runs through July 20. In addition, a solo exhibition of Stern’s work
opens March 13 at A Hug From The Art World, a gallery in New York City’s Chelsea
neighborhood.
