Religion – Western, Eastern and otherwise – is a vast cluster of cultural phenomena, including sacred texts, mythologies and theologies, moral codes, and every conceivable kind of ritual, which is best explored from the perspective of more than one discipline.

Union is the perfect place to study this inherently interdisciplinary field. The major in religious studies is designed to help students gather insights from anthropology, art, classics, history, literature, modern languages, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology and other disciplines as they seek to understand this complicated and dynamic area of human behavior.

Thematic concentrations

Areas of concentration are offered in Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Asian Religions ancient Mediterranean religions, and religion, culture and society.

Courses

Choose from dozens of courses and seminars. Some you might find intriguing are Ancient World Mythology; From Chant to Mozart; Global Christianities; Islamic Art and Architecture; Myth, Ritual and Magic; From Bombs to Buddhism; Religion in the Pagan World; The Holocaust; Tibetan Art; Women and Politics in the Muslim World; and Yiddish Literature in Translation.

Faculty

Our faculty's teaching and research spans Jewish, Christian, and Islamic formative periods; the history and religion of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia; the Neo-Assyrian Empire; biblical Hebrew; the economic history of Western Asia in the first millennium BCE; fundamental physics and religion; and scientific perspectives on divine action.
