Effective this year, Union College adds Juneteenth (June 19th) as a recognized college holiday. This means that Schaffer Library will be closed for the day on Monday, June 19th, 2023.
Juneteenth commemorates the day when news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, more than two years after the proclamation was issued. This day signifies the end of slavery in the United States and is considered by many to be America’s second independence day.
